through Karate to improve their lives away from Karate. The movements of Karate provide the par- ticipants of our Youth & Adult Program with a template to which they can improve their lives. Physical benefits and mental well being is a side effect of authentic Karate instruction. Al- though the participant of our youth and adult classes train together as a group, the benefits are specific to each individual. The Founder & Chief Instructor of the Tra- ditional Karate of Brandon is Scott Middleton. For the last 39 years he has dedicated his life to Karate training. Scott is an internationally certified instructor & examiner who is ranked a 7th degree black belt. Several times a year Scott travels across North America, and Europe as a highly sought after guest instructor teaching at a variety of camps and events around the World. He brings an incredible wealth of knowledge and expe- rience to the members of the Traditional Ka- rate of Brandon: 7 times Manitoba Provincial Champion, a finalist at the Canadian National Tournament, and the 2011 WTKO North Amer- ican Champion. To find out more about the Traditional Ka- rate of Brandon please visit our webpage: traditionalkarateofbrandon.ca
The Traditional Karate of Brandon was founded in 1992, with the sole objective of practicing, preserving, and propagating au- thentic Shotokan Karate. It is our fundamental belief that by studying Karate as a way of life, many physical and mental benefits will result. Sessions for the Traditional Karate of Brandon are offered on Tuesday’s, Thursday’s, or Satur- day’s. Our extremely popular Parent & Child Pro- gram is known as Kodomo Karate. Kodomo simply translates from Japanese as “Child” or “Children”. It is a specialty program for 4 and 5 year olds that is designed to incorporate the basic movements of Karate. In this program the child will work under the direction of Scott Middleton as they navigate their first steps into the World of Karate. Our Children’s Program specifically targets areas that are essential to the development of this age range. Through the movements of Ka- rate children will not only improve physically, but mentally as well. Physically children may improve their agility, motor skills, flexibility, strength, and balance. Mentally children will improve their concentration, confidence, atti- tude, manners, and self discipline. Our hope is that the participants of our children’s program will take the benefits, and life skills learned

All Kids Musicals auditioning for The Magical Land of Oz » Mecca Productions produces two kids’ shows per year
“There is something really special about bringing kids from so many communities to- gether to create something as a cast,” Vascon- celos said. “Kids who met during our first few kids’ mu- sicals forged lifelong friendships. We love that! Community, friendship and fun are what our shows are all about!’ While an audition is required for those who want to be part of Mecca shows, the audition process for Kids’ Musicals is low-pressure and focused on getting to know each young per- former as the cast list is created. There are still a few spots for our September auditions. Mecca produces two kids shows each year. The Little Mermaid takes to the WMCA stage in May 2026. Our kids’ musicals are the major fund- raiser for Mecca Arts Project, a board-run, registered non-profit who work to remove financial bar- riers to theatre arts programming and support the creation of live theatre at the WMCA. tions, invites you to join the fun! “Our kids’ musicals give kids who have never stepped on the WMCA stage before the chance to experience a ‘real show’ in an incredible, professional venue,” Vasconcelos said. “The Magical Land of Oz is open to all kids in grades 1 and older, regardless of experience. Being part of the show is rewarding and fun — for the kids and for us! The growth kids experience through the process and on stage is truly in- credible.” The production team for Mecca Kids’ Musi- cals is led by Mecca instructors, who are also experienced performers. They love sharing what they know about performing and musical theatre. ‘A team of more than a dozen dedicat- ed adults work together behind the scenes on our kids musicals. They are some of the most experienced arts educators in our region. They LOVE musical theatre and it shows! “We chose The Magical Land of Oz because it has so many supporting roles and it’s a VERY funny show! We are so excited to see more kids shine on stage,” Vasconcelos said. “There are so many talented young people in our region, we want to highlight as many as we can.” Young performers from across western Man- itoba — including Minnedosa, Virden, Souris, Neepawa, Portage and Dauphin — travel to the Mecca Studio at 110 Sixth St. to join the cast.
Work with and learn from some of Westman’s most experienced musical theatre educators & performers as you prepare for opening night at the WMCA. If you can make the commitment to attend the rehearsals, we will teach you what you need to know to have an amazing experience on stage and off! It’s as much fun as it looks. Brandon School of Dance celebrates community through movement
BUILDING ARTISTS AND RESILIENT INDIVIDUALS Through small class sizes and person- alized attention, BSD’s qualified teachers cultivate technique, artistry, and disci- pline. The faculty expands further with the August arrival of acclaimed Dubai- based instructors Beth and Vitaliy Fedor- ov, bringing international expertise as experienced teachers and professional dancers. Students gain confidence and lifelong friendships while participating in annu- al recitals, performances at the Brandon Festival of the Arts, regional competi- tions, and international travel. Students can progress through entering nation- al and international genre-specific ex- aminations essential for professional growth. As BSD emphasizes, “Dance is a holis- tic discipline building physical health, mental agility, creativity, and self-disci- pline – equipping students to face life’s challenges with grace.” COMMUNITY, VISION AND OPPORTUNITIES Further elevating our ballet program, we proudly announce a collaboration with the prestigious Royal Winnipeg Bal- let School, who will offer exclusive work- shops for BSD students this fall.
For over fifty years since its founding in 1973, the Brandon School of Dance (BSD) has pulsed as the artistic heart- beat of Westman. More than a studio, this cherished institution stands as a corner- stone of Brandon’s cultural life, nurturing talent while weaving dance into our com- munity’s fabric as the region’s premier dance school. A SPECTRUM OF STYLES UNDER ONE ROOF BSD’s inclusive spirit welcomes stu- dents from 18 months through adult- hood, tailoring programs for complete beginners to pre-professional dancers. The school offers exceptional instruc- tion across RAD-certified ballet, hip-hop, jazz, tap, contemporary, acro, musical theatre and more – ensuring every inter- est and ability finds its perfect expres- sion. EXCELLENCE IN EVERY DETAIL The school’s commitment materializes in its state-of-the-art 7,000-square-foot facility featuring four expansive studios with professional sprung floors, full- length mirrors, and safety mats. education, and family life. This part- nership directly addresses those needs while also working toward the broader goal of reducing traffic inci- dents, particularly in regions where collision rates remain a concern. By expanding training to locations such as Killarney, Waywayseecappoo and other rural communities, this program reaches those who need it most. It’s more than just a driving course —it’s an investment in safety, opportunity, and equity. This collaboration demonstrates what is possible when public insti- tutions work together with purpose. Assiniboine and MPI are not just teaching people to drive; they’re helping build stronger, safer com- munities across Manitoba.
and underserved areas of Manitoba. This program combines 16 hours of classroom instruction with four hours of practical, on-road training. For a modest cost of $210, partici- pants will receive education that not only prepares them for their road test but also promotes responsi- ble, confident driving. Assiniboine’s delivery of this program ensures high-quality instruction that meets the needs of adult learners who may not have previously had access to such resources. MPI’s funding commitment — to- taling over $446,000 — underscores the importance of road safety and community mobility. For many Manitobans, obtaining a driver’s li- cence is essential for employment,
