Take care of your surroundings A critical aspect of responsible fishing is knowing how to protect the ecosystems you visit. Because each lake and river has its own delicate balance of living things, you must avoid moving fish and other organisms from one area to another. Follow these guidelines to ensure your equipment is sufficiently sanitized. • Clean off your watercraft—inside and out—and all fish- ing gear. Remove any traces of plants, animals and soil or mud. • Pour water out of all vessels or containers. Don’t forget to drain the motor and check any spaces that might catch small amounts of water. • Let all your gear sit out to dry for at least five days after a fishing trip. If you can’t wait that long, be sure to thor- oughly wipe everything down. • Eliminate unused bait or fish parts before leaving your fishing area. Remember to clean up after yourself and take away all unused materials and equipment. Plastic packaging and trace amounts of fishing line can be harmful to wildlife in the area. National Fishing Week takes place from June 27 to July 5, 2026. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a first-timer, National Fishing Week is a prime opportunity to reel one in. Are you ready to take to the waters? Visit your local outfitters to get geared up. ✹
