Ditch Lake and surrounding areas. She recalled having approximately 1,700 show- ings in 2021, sometimes showing as many as 23 properties in one day. “Real estate in the area will always be strong … the properties hold their value, but there was a little more of an extra push,” Barnett said, adding that last year showed closer to regular numbers. “Nothing is indicating to me that we’re going to do anything different [in 2023] than we’ve done in previous years.” » Continued on Page 4

After a surge in cottage sales spurring from COVID lockdowns, particularly in 2021, the market of summer getaways seems to be re- turning to normal. Cottage country hot spots such as Pelican Lake, Oak Lake Beach, Clear Lake and surrounding areas all saw a sharp increase in property sales in 2021, according to data provided by Brandon Area Realtors, only to slow throughout 2022. “I have never seen num- bers like that, and I’ve been selling for 15 years,” said Les-

Barnett services Clear Lake (Wasagaming), Erick- son, Onanole, Sandy Lake,

lie Barnett, real estate agent with Century 21 Westman Realty. “It was an anomaly.”

“We don’t have people that can show up from 10 minutes away to look at a property, someone might be coming from Regina or Winnipeg, even driving in from Brandon can take hours. You do have a plan and this is part of that plan- ning.” As someone who was born and raised in the area, Barnett said it’s heartwarm- ing to hear the reasons why people are looking to own a cottage in her community. “It’s so wonderful to meet people and learn about where they come from and what has been the draw for them to decide that this is where they want to be,” Bar- nett said. “I am very fortu- nate to have an opportunity every day to meet someone new and help them tran- sition to something that they’ve been dreaming about.”

The real estate market in cottage country is different than those in more urban areas, Barnett said, as there are so many different rea- sons why someone decides to purchase a cottage. Buyers are usually less set on one particular area as they are on what they’re looking for in a property, such as a year-round cottage versus seasonal, lakefront views, the size and the price point, Barnett said. “It is such a diverse mix of people who come here, which is why not one prop- erty is the same as the next,” Barnett said. “You’re coming here for a lifestyle … [the property] has to strike you, you have to be able to envi- sion yourself enjoying it the way you’ve dreamed of.” If this is the year you’ve decided to take the leap into

cottage living, Barnett said it’s always a good idea to start with your team of pro- fessionals. Getting pre-qualified with a lender allows you to work within your budget, Barnett said, and having a lawyer and an agent to advise you can help the process go smoother. “Going in green without having those three things

worked out does make it a little bit more difficult. If you are in the situation where you fall in love with some- thing and are competing against somebody, you’re coming to the table a little bit late.” Having an agent who can tailor a search of properties toward what you’re looking for also keeps showings on task and efficient, she added.

combined with internation- al travel. “I always wondered why Manitoba didn’t have unique stays,” Jamieson said, considering she was seeing them become quite prominant in other coun- tries around the world. The inspiration for Moon- lit Canopy came from a des- tination in Finland where they offer igloos with glass ceilings to view the north- ern lights. “I just thought what a cool experience to bring to Manitoba, not only just the northern lights but just na- ture in general,” she said. The location was deter- mined because it is near and dear to their hearts. Turner grew up at Pelican lake and their family enjoys the area, even spending their sum- mers there. “When we were looking for a location … first of all, we need to be able to service it and manage it, so it has to be close to home,” but she added it has to be unique enough to attract visitors. After a lot of research and consultation, they proposed the idea to the Pleasant Val- ley Golf Course, and they got the green light. Moonlit Canopy is just over an hour drive southeast of Brandon. » Continued on Page 10

“There’s no better way to create special memories than camping in the out- doors. Immersing yourself in nature, exploring, star- gazing, and socializing on the patio … yet spending a night in the comfort of a cosy room with many of the amenities you would expect from an upscale retreat. That’s what glamping is all about,” states the descrip- tion on MoonlitCanopy.ca. “Our goal for Moonlit Canopy is to create a space where you can escape, re- charge, reconnect and then go home and take on the world.” Cassandra Jamieson and her husband Turner launched Moonlit Canopy in July 2021, in the midst of the COVID pandemic. The Jamiesons also own McPhail Travel in Brandon. During the pandemic, internation- al travel essentially came to a halt so it gave them the chance to explore this new venture. The global pandem- ic made them realize that there could be similar con- cerns in the future, so it was important for them to cre- ate a second arm of their business to remain sus- tainable — a niche getaway domestically in Manitoba,

there is Wi-Fi, Jamieson said she hopes people take the time to disconnect from the screens. “Maybe it’s what I needed during COVID, and that’s where this project stemmed from, but I find myself most at peace when I can completely disconnect — nobody’s calling me, no- body’s emailing me, no- body’s bugging me. It’s just so relaxing, and that’s what I want people to experi- ence when they’re there. I want them to hear the birds chirping.” Moonlit Canopy is open year-round. Jamieson said fall is one of her favour- ite times there as the trees change colour to create a beautiful backdrop. In the winter, the trails turn into snowshoeing trails, and the lake is excellent for ice fish- ing and snowmobiling. With only three domes available, they book up fast. But Jamieson said keep an eye on their social media as they do have cancellations. They open up the calendar

in four-month blocks, so the next chance will be in June for the fall calendar. This August will mark the beginning of their third year, and they feel they have gotten into a good groove. “One benefit of me work- ing in the tourism industry is that I work with a lot of reservation systems and … on the customer ser- vice side of things, making bookings and arrange- ments,” she said. “That was very familiar to me so with the staff in our office, we are able to manage the in- quiries, the bookings, the cancellations, whatever it is that might come in.” On the other side of things, Turner is in charge the maintenance of the domes. “He is a Red Seal mechan- ic, but he also does carpen- try work on the site, so I guess you could call him a jack of all trades.” Moonlit Canopy has cus- tomer relations staff as well as housekeepers who live nearby.

The majority of guests they have seen so far have been from Manitoba, right across the province. Jamie- son said they have also wel- comed people from neigh- bouring provinces and even from south of the border, as they are only about 40 min- utes from North Dakota. They see families come to enjoy the area, couples, girls getaways, and a lot of special occasions, such as anniversaries, honeymoons and babymoons. “Relax, refresh and just plain chill or adventure and play! Moonlit Canopy is pretty low key. No butler, no room service or restaurants on site,” states the website. “Our ‘no-frills’ vibe is part of our charm, but it’s not for everyone. We have created a piece of paradise for you.” » Twitter: @jillianaustin » jillianaustin.news@gmail. com » Jillian Austin is a freelance writer, as well as a real es- tate agent with Century 21 Westman Realty.

The three domes are tucked into the treeline on the hillside between hole 9 and hole 18, approximate- ly 70 feet apart. Each dome has a deck with a barbecue, patio table, chairs and pri- vate hot tub. Inside there is a centre mezzanine with a kitchenette, a king bed, and then up in the loft is a queen bed. There is a three-piece bathroom, kitchen table for four and a small love seat with two chairs for relaxing. As for activities, there are many to choose from. Golfing is right outside your door, and the beach is a short walk away. Visitors can also kayak, ride e-bikes and explore the hiking trails. Each dome has a basket of outdoor games, board games, cards and even a record player. Noticeably missing is a television, which was purposely left out. “Just to kind of bring back that summer, nostalgic at- mosphere,” she said. While

BY JILLIAN AUSTIN

Friends of RMNP for the past 24 years. It is a non-profit organization that operates year-round, offering edu- cational and research pro- grams, summer camps and special events. Every year outdoor enthu- siasts flock to the national park to explore all it has to offer. “Hiking is a very popular activity and … there’s plenty of space for all users,” said Jennifer Gustafson, RMNP visitor experience product development officer. Trails can be used for day hiking, multi-day hiking, to access the backcountry campsites, wildlife watching, wildlife photography, bird watching, fitness, connect- ing with friends and family, and exploration. Trails can also be used for cycling and horseback riding. “Trails engage visitors and connect them to our place,”

Gustafson said. “Trails are part of the Indigenous com- munity’s history and cul- ture, they protect the envi- ronment by bringing visitors to the right places, inspiring them to protect nature and offering them active trans- portation options.” Gustafson added hiking helps improve mental health as well as physical and social well-being. It is important to do your research before embarking on a hiking trek. Parks Can- ada has a rating system for its trails: Easy (green circle) is suitable for all visitors in- cluding those with no trail experience. There is little or no elevation gain or loss. Hard packed surface with no major obstacles and mini- mal stairs. Estimated time to complete the trail is no lon- ger than two hours. (0-5 km) Gustafson said these trails have a good quality of mark-

ing, parking lots, sometimes benches and bridges. They are usually closer to the townsite and easy to access for park staff if assistance is required. They are inspected on a regular basis. Moderate (blue square) is suitable for most visitors who have some basic trail experience, basic experi- ence in their chosen activity and are generally prepared. Hikers may experience moderate elevation gain with some short steep sec- tions. (0-15 km) Difficult (black diamond) is suitable for visitors who have trail experience, expe- rience in their chosen activ- ity and are prepared. Hikers may experience major ele- vation gain with long steep sections and a variety of ter- rain including wet areas and loose soil. (0-15 km +) » Continued on Page 18

With more than 350 ki- lometres of trails, Riding Mountain National Park’s diverse landscape and stun- ning views are sure to create an unforgettable hiking ex- perience. Whether you are an expe- rienced hiker or just starting out, the park has options ranging from short and easy walks to challenging multi- day hikes. George Hartlen, chief ad- ministrative officer with Friends of RMNP, is an avid hiker and says while the trails all offer a different ex- perience, views and terrain, it all comes back to one thing: “Getting out, con- necting with nature again and just having that experi- ence of having this wonder- ful location in our province to experience and enjoy.” Hartlen has been with

» Continued from Page 14 BEST TRAILS FOR BEGINNERS/FAMILIES • Ominnik Marsh — Easy, 0.5 km, Loop “It’s a very popular one primarily because it is locat- ed in the townsite and it’s ac- cessible by all family mem- bers,” Hartlen said. “It has a floating boardwalk, and a lot of kids like to do the critter dipping activities.” • Lake Shore — Main Beach to Deep Bay Trail: Easy, 3.6 km This gravel-surfaced trail is a perfect fit for a morning run, or leisurely walks with relatives. BEST INSTAGRAM SPOT • Bald Hill — Difficult This difficult trail has a reputation of providing one of the best views in RMNP. It’s an investment in time and energy, so be sure to prepare accordingly. It’s a challenging 11km return trip to the Bald Hill viewpoint and back. “They are longer trails, they are up and down the es- carpment so they definitely are not for the novice hiker,” Hartlen said. HIDDEN GEM • Oak Ridge Trail — 3.1 km or 6.5 km, Loop Gustafson said this trail has some amazing view- points and it is actually not that difficult. While it is a blue square rating, it is due to the fact it is out of town and a bit of a distance away. “It’s kind of a mini version of the escarpment network and just sort of an introduc- tion,” Gustafson said. “So if you have people that want

to start, do the Oak Ridge Trail, see how they do on that trail and then they can graduate up to more of the escarpment network.”

Kinosao (Moderate, 1.9 km, One-way). “Moon Lake has a cou- ple of red chairs midway through the trail that have a great view of the lake and is a nice spot to take a snack break,” she said. “Kinosao trail leads to Kinosao Lake and has a canoe that’s avail- able for visitor use. Kinosao shares its trailhead with the Grey Owl and Brûlé trails; for an extra long hike you can hike to Grey Owl’s Cabin and then jump onto the Kinosao trail at the junction.” Evans said hiking is one of her favourite pastimes. “The fresh air and the peacefulness that comes with getting out of the city and spending some time in nature. It’s relaxing and al- lows me to shut off my mind for a few hours.”

pling of wildlife and vegeta- tion which can add up espe- cially in more popular areas. • Dress for the weather. Be prepared for changing tem- peratures throughout the day. Look at local weather forecasts and if a storm ap- proaches, then turn back. • Be respectful of the envi- ronment around you. • Pack the essentials you need. Make sure you stay hy- drated and keep energy lev- els high with the right foods. • Make sure you tell some- one where you’re going as cell service is not always re- liable. • Go at a consistent pace and be sure not to over-ex- ert yourself — listen to your body. • Be bear aware. Make noise so you don’t startle a bear. Clapping, singing, talking loudly or using a bear bell especially when near streams, dense vegeta- tion and berry patches, on windy days, and in areas of low visibility. Watch for fresh bear signs like tracks and droppings. Leave the area if the signs are fresh. • Larger size groups are less likely to have a serious bear encounter. We recom- mend hiking in a tight group of two to three people. • Keep dogs on leashes at all times. Dogs can pro- voke defensive behaviour in bears. BEST TRAINING TRAILS • Brûlé Trail — Easy, 2.2 km or 4.1 km, Loop A short drive from Wasag- aming, the trail is shaped like a figure-8, forming a short loop and a long loop. Journeying on the long loop, see aging trees and a variety of flowers before arriving at Lake Kinosao. “It’s a relatively flat trail but it just kind of gets you building up to that dis- tance,” Hartlen said. • Arrowhead Trail — Mod- erate, 3.4 km, Loop Whether you plan to visit the rolling terrain of Arrow- head trail during a bright summer’s day, or on snow- shoes in the middle of win- ter, the trail is ideal in any season. Hartlen said Arrowhead helps prepare hikers for go- ing up and down hills on the more difficult trails. FOR THE EXPERIENCED HIKER • GORGE CREEK — Diffi- cult, 6.4 km “It’s one of our most pop- ular, beautiful trails just because it has some major elevation change through- out,” Gustafson said. “It goes through boreal [forest], de- ciduous and then you get to the bottom of the escarp- ment.” Kayla Evans has been hik- ing for several years and says her two favourites trails at RMNP are Moon Lake (Dif- ficult, 9.5 km, Loop) and

TIPS TO STAY SAFE ON THE TRAILS

• Check the website before heading out for updates on trail conditions. Check in at the park for updates and make sure there is no bear activity or fallen trees. • Know your limitations. Start small and work your way up to the more chal- lenging hikes. • Recognize limitations of others in your group. Not ev- eryone is at the same speed or endurance level. • Stick to the hiking trail — Coming away from the path causes unnecessary tram-
