Public greenspaces have also been associated with social interaction, which is an important contributing factor towards improved well-being. Exposure to sun- light counteracts seasonal affective disorder, which 15 per cent of Canadians ex- perience to varying degrees. Sunlight is also a source of vitamin D. Being in greenspace also increases exposure to a range of microorganism and bacteria that are helpful in the development of the im- mune system and for the regulation of inflammatory responses, such as diabetes, asthma, arthritis and other diseases. This symbiosis is called the “old friends” hy- pothesis, and refers to how mammals co-evolved with an array of organisms that helped to strengthen their immune systems. » Continued on Page 22
An estimated three million Canadians aged 18 years and older are dealing with mood and anxiety disorders, ac- cording to Statistics Canada. As of last year, doctors are now able to prescribe some- thing other than therapy and medication to help people struggling with their mental health – time in nature. Under the PaRx initiative, physicians in Canada can prescribe free passes to na- tional parks for patients who could stand to benefit from more time spent in a natural environment. Those who spend two hours a week in a natural setting report significantly better health and well-be- ing, the PaRx Canada web- site says. From diabetes to heart disease to anxiety and depression, research shows that connecting to nature can powerfully improve

health. Children who play in green spaces are also shown to focus better, master mo- tor skills more quickly and be more active. Greenspace exposure is associated with many health benefits in intervention and observational studies, according to a report from Norwich Medical School at the University of East Anglia
in the UK. The study sites several reasons for the positive re- lationship between nature and health and well-being, one being the simple fact that being in a greenspace and in nature offers more opportunities for physi- cal activity such as hiking, walking, swimming, cycling and more.
