Barrel racing, one of the main equestrian events at the fair, isn’t a sport for the faint of heart. It’s a fast paced, adrenaline pumping event, where horse and rid- er run a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels for the fastest time. Born out of the rodeo, barrel racing start- ed as an event that women could compete in as all oth- er rodeo events were tradi- tionally for men. But while rodeos tend to keep their barrel racing competitions female-only, both women and men compete in bar- rel racing events across the country and in the United States.
