around in 10 minutes or so, and not showing any sign of improvement, I would get them to a vet,” Innes says. It’s worth having sup- plies on hand to clean your pet’s ears after they’ve been splashing around in the lake, too, as pets—especially dogs that have those adorably flop- py ears—can easily get ear infections after swimming. Moisture in their ears allows bacteria or fungi to thrive, so keeping their ears clean and dry is important. “Use gauze squares or a face cloth to dry out the ex- cess water,” says Innes. “Even flipping their ears over so the air can get at them a bit better is not a bad idea.” With a little extra prep work, you and your pet will be set for a summer of lake fun and ready for whatever comes your way.
Besides keeping your pet safe from these tiny-but- mighty threats, you’ll want to stock a First Aid kit for your lake adventures. Should your canine or feline companion catch their paw on a wayward branch, or have some other mishap occur when you’re far from emergency vet care, a First Aid kit can tide you over until you’re able to get medi- cal help. Gauze, vet wrap, and a pet thermometer are all benefi- cial to include, though your vet or local pet store can sug- gest the necessities based on your pet and the activities you’ll be taking part in to- gether. If you’ll be out in the sun of- ten with your pet, heat stroke is something you’ll want to watch for (this is where the thermometer can come in handy!). Excessive panting

as possible, Innes suggests, whether that’s getting them into air conditioning or us- ing a fan to bring their body temperature down. Cold wa- ter works, too, provided it’s not ice cold, as it can hamper their sweat glands from work- ing properly. “If they’re not coming
and an increased heart rate are the early signs, as well as vomiting. “When it gets really bad, you’re going to see lethargy,” says Innes. “They’re not going to want to get up and move. Worst case scenario, they might go into seizures.” Cool your pet off as soon
