well as barrel-racing competitions. Exhibitors are coming from Ontario and Western Canada, as well as a few northern States. Cleaver said several horse exhibitors are in California and Florida at the mo- ment, but return home for the shows. Here, then, is a quick overview of the horse shows at the winter fair: HUNTER JUMPER/SHOW JUMPING While they look the same, there are subtle differences between show jumping and hunter jumper disci- plines. Show jumping is more colourful, and it’s all about the numbers. Simply put, the horse-and-rider team with the fast- est time and the fewest faults — hitting and knocking down rails— wins. Entries are down slightly due to short notice, but there are 12 jumpers
confirmed for the show. Each night of the fair features some of Canada’s top equestrian show jumping. Riders and horses from all over Manitoba, Sas- katchewan, Alberta, Ontario and the Midwest United States will be vying for a share of several cash prizes. All show jumping will take place in the main arena. Judged on their performance, rid- ers and horses must complete a set pattern of jumps. Show jumping is the only sport where two living beings compete together: a horse and a rider. The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair horse show is Manitoba’s largest in- door equestrian event, featuring hunt- er jumper, show jumping, hackney and draft horse competitions each day in the Westoba Place main arena and the Westoba AG Centre of Excellence, as
