Spruce Up: Curb Appeal Without Breaking the Bank

Spring is a great time to check out the curb appeal of your home and garden. As you step back and take in the whole picture, you might find yourself less than wowed by your landcaping.

“Start with how much you can afford to spend — determine what fits with- in your budget without straining other financial obligations,” says Tashman. She says to do your homework and get quotes from multiple contractors first to determine a realistic cost for the project. “I also recommend homeowners have a percentage of the total budget on hand. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 10 to 20 per cent of the project cost available upfront to cover unexpect- ed expenses or as a down payment for financing,” she says. Plan ahead To develop a sound budget, it’s im- portant to take time to consider every possible expense associated with the project — that includes the cost of in- stallation as well as the ongoing cost of maintenance to ensure your investment remains viable. Tashman says it’s different for everyone depending on their financial situation.
